Diary, 1864-1865.

Simpson's Civil War diary covers the period 5 May 1864 through 27 January 1865. In it he recorded military activity (destroying railroad tracks and bridges, capturing prisoners and weapons), inspections, travel from Boston to "the front" in Virginia, military camp life, a reference on 25 November 1864 to the "loyal people of the North for a Thanksgiving dinner. Bully for the Sanitary Commission," and letters which he received and sent. He also compiled a "List of Correspondents," including their home addresses, and included a narrative on "The Campaign of 64," which was "Respectfully dedicated to the heroes of the 5 [th?] U.C. [?] Composed by one of them." Simpson also prepared a "List of Killed and Wounded of Co. H, 18th Mass. Veteran Vols. in the present campaign commencing May 5th, 1864."

Charles Winfield Simpson (1844-1865), a farmer from Roxbury, Mass., served first during the Civil War with the 18th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in December 1862, at Fredericksburg, Va., and was subsequently discharged. He reenlisted and was again wounded in June 1864, after which he was transferred in October 1864 to the 32nd Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
